Board Member Concert - Wed 6/8, 7:30PM

The Mountain Laurel Board Members will perform a few songs on autoharp and other instruments to get the festivities off to a solid musical start.

Carter Family Songs Workshop - Ivan Stiles - Thu 6/9, 11:30AM

This workshop will feature songs by the Carter Family, some definitely written by A. P. Carter and some simply attributed to the Carter Family. We’ll be playing “The Winding Stream,” “Sweet Fern,” “My Dixie Darling,” and “Jimmy Brown the Newsboy.”

Workshop Leader Concert - Thu 6/9, 1:30PM

In addition to our featured performers, MLAG includes many workshops taught by other members of our community. This concert allows those workshop leaders to talk briefly about their workshops, and perform a tune; if there's time, maybe even two tunes.  While the virtual track offers just 6 workshops from 6 instructors, this concert will give a taste of what's available to those attending Mountain Laurel in person.

Jamming 101 Workshop - Les Gustafson-Zook - Thu 6/9, 3:45PM

A great beginning melody introduction to jamming with fiddle tunes, simply taught but with lots of opportunities to make them your own. We’ll be learning two tunes - “Fly Around, My Pretty Little Miss” and “Rock the Cradle Joe.”

Our featured performers take the stage! The Thursday lineup features Lucille Reilly, Ron Wall, Cindy Harris and her band Strange Times, and Karen Mueller.

Christmas in June Workshop - Ron Wall - Fri 6/10, 11:30AM

The  autoharp is perfectly suited to playing beautiful Christmas carols, and Ron loves them any time of year. Come and play some lovely yuletide tunes, and get some tips on how Ron arranges them  for recordings and makes them into medleys.

Virtual Jam - Fri 6/10, 1:30PM

The Jam Band will be in the Shippensburg auditorium, along with In Person jammers... and you can listen in and play along from home!  We will mute your audio, but you will see the group playing in the hall as you join in the fun.”

It's a grand experiment in virtually playing together.

Learn a Waltz "Heart of the Heartland" Workshop - Karen Mueller - Fri 6/10, 3:45PM

Learn this majestic waltz, featured in the Ken Burns "Lewis & Clark" documentary. Minnesota-born Ukrainian-American Ostroushko was a master mandolinist, fiddler, and composer, and "Heartland" stands as his best-known work. Karen knew Peter and had the honor of performing the tune with him in concert. Learn the intricacies of playing the melody and rhythm, as well as the opportunities for expression and dynamics in both the keys of G and C, with open chording options noted for those who know the technique.

30th Annual Mountain Laurel Autoharp Championship - Fri 6/10, 7:30PM

After a two-year hiatus, the MLAG Autoharp Championship returns!  Anyone attending in person can enter and show off their skills. Five finalists will compete in a second round, and the top three winners will receive fine luthier autoharps as prizes. The 30th MLAG Champion will be a featured performer in 2023.

Fill Out Tunes with Fill-Ins Workshop - Lucille Reilly - Sat 6/11, 11:30AM

Everybody does this “brush thing” between melody notes to fill in tunes, but what’s the formula? By the end of this workshop, you will simply know when to pinch and brush by ear! Get started with “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Good Night, Irene,” and “I’ll Fly Away.” Bring a thumb pick and three finger picks.

So you’re an autoharper and no one is inviting you to play in their band. Why not start your own? Come chat about how autoharp can play a role other than rhythm in a band. We’ll discuss compatible instruments, repertoire, how to find bandmates, and learning to play together. And gigs — we should talk about that too!
